I just finished reading an article posted in this months SportsShooter.com Newsletter and can't help but point you in the direction of such a good read. I have always wanted to go on this rant but have not had the time. That said, the more I run into hobbyists giving away photos the more I consider offering up free tax services, brain surgery, and perhaps teaching grade 10 social studies... I aced that class. Kudos to Matt Brown for putting this in type. Have a peak http://www.sportsshooter.com/news/1989
Don't get me wrong, I love educating the hobbyists and giving them the tools to decorate their rec. room walls with photos of their children. The issue at hand is that these folks are giving away their often inferior images causing the pros to remove themselves from the sidelines which will ultimately leave the athletes with no consistent professional images to choose from... only the semi-sharp over-corrected images of those who have been educated in a completely unrelated field. One more thing I'll add is that after the pros quit showing up, the athletes can rest assured that coincidentally on the day of most importance to their athletic careers the sidelines will be completely devoid of photographers as on that day they will inevitably be "volunteering" there services elsewhere... perhaps ruining someone's wedding photos FOR FREE.
The moral of the story is, if you want to provide a service, then ask a reasonable fee, sell your prints for a reasonable price. If you make money at it, then good for you... if you don't, you are likely not skilled enough to be providing said service.
